[Anatomy_07] Attachments of the Meniscus & cruciate ligaments

 

Superior-view drawing shows relations to meniscal roots attachment sites, anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, transverse ligament, and posterior meniscofemoral Wrisberg's ligament.

 

Anterior root of the medial meniscus: The anterior root of MM inserts along the tibial eminence, anterior to the insertion of the anterior cruciate ligament. 

Posterior fibers of the anterior horn attachment of the medial meniscus attach to the transverse ligament.

 

Posterior root of the medial meniscus: Medial meniscus posterior root attaches anterior to the insertion of the PCL and posterior to the medial tibial spine.

 

Anterior root of lateral meniscus: The anterior horn of the lateral meniscus attaches to the intercondylar fossa anterior to the lateral tibial tubercle and adjacent to the ACL 

The anterior root of the lateral meniscus attaches anteriorly, along the lateral tibial tubercle, posterolateral to the medial meniscus anterior root. 

 

Posterior root of lateral meniscus: The posterior root of the lateral meniscus has two attachment sites of the posterior slope of lateral tubercle and intertubercular region.

ACL, PCL: Intracapsular and extrasynovial structures and enveloped by a fold of synovium 

 

ACL: ACL has tibial attachment anterior and lateral to medial intercondylar tubercle (eminence). The tibial footprint has greater attachment area variation compared to the femoral footprint. It has broader or larger than femoral attachment and passes deep to the transverse ligament of the knee.

 

PCL: PCL attaches to the posterior intercondyloid fossa of the tibia.

It's not a real patient's MRI, but they are virtual images very similar to the images in the journals. The images will be created for educational purposes.
