✅Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL)
- Location: Part of the lateral ankle ligament complex, stabilizing the talus.
- Anatomy: A flat, intracapsular ligament (6-10 mm long, 2 mm thick) connecting the lateral malleolus to the talar neck.
- Variants: Typically two bands, but may have one or three.
- MRI Features:
✅Posterior Talofibular Ligament (PTFL)
- Location: Part of the lateral ankle ligament complex; secondary stabilizer when other ligaments are intact. Least commonly injured of the lateral ligaments.
- Anatomy: Intracapsular but extra-synovial ligament connecting the posterior fibula to the lateral tubercle of the talus.
- Relations: Lies deep to the peroneal retinaculum and flexor hallucis longus tendon.
- Variants: Fibers may insert into an os trigonum if present.
- MRI Features: Striated or striped appearance due to fibrofatty composition.
