[Tear_09] Wrisberg type discoid lateral meniscus -07

by MSK MRI 2021. 10. 9.

Wrisberg-variant discoid lateral meniscus can be interpreted as peripheral longitudinal tear or popliteomeniscal fascicles tear.
Watanabe classification recognizes three distinct variants of discoid meniscus, complete variant, partial variant, and Wrisberg variant.

The Wrisberg-variant discoid lateral meniscus is an unstable type that lacks posterior ligament attachments, having only an attachment from the meniscofemoral ligament of Wrisberg.

The lateral meniscus shows discoid morphology, congenital absence of PMFs and it was stabilized only by the Wrisberg ligament
so, The sagittal image reveals anterior displacement of the lateral meniscus relative to the lateral tibial plateau with a floating meniscus appearance .
As a result, a fluid signal is interposed between the lateral meniscus and the joint capsule, simulating a peripheral tear or injury to the meniscal fascicles

We can not distinguish a true Wrisberg variant meniscus from a traumatic injury to the posterior capsule but the young age, the clinical presentation and the non-traumatic history of the patient can help to understand the origin of abnormality of PMFs
