📌 Understanding the causes of graft failure is crucial for improving meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT) outcomes. The primary reasons for graft failure include:

1️⃣ Implantation Site Issues:

  • Failures can occur due to avulsion at the root, unsuccessful plug incorporation, or fracture of the bone bridge.

2️⃣ Healing Complications:

  • Incomplete healing or detachment from the meniscocapsular junction can compromise graft stability.

3️⃣ Graft Shrinkage:

  • A reduction in graft size postoperatively can affect its function and longevity.

4️⃣  Infection:

  • Postoperative infections can lead to significant complications, including graft failure.

4️⃣ Meniscus Tearing:

  • Similar to native meniscus tears, allograft tears are identified by fluid signals extending to the graft surface on imaging.

✅ Additionally, signs of allograft menisci degeneration and tearing should prompt careful consideration, particularly when:

  • There is a progression of peripheral extrusion.
  • Delayed increases in meniscus signals are observed after MAT.
  • Fluid signals are seen on T2-weighted MRI images.
