📌 Autologous Matrix-Induced Chondrogenesis (AMIC)

  • Autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis (AMIC) is a surgical technique designed to enhance the effectiveness of arthroscopic microfracture procedures.

✅ Procedure

  1. Curettage: Cleaning the cartilage defect area.
  2. Microfracture: Creating small fractures in the exposed subchondral bone to form channels for bone marrow stem cells to migrate to the damaged area.
  3. Membrane Attachment: Attaching a collagen I/III membrane to the damaged area using sutures or allogenic fibrin glue.

✅ Indications and Efficacy

  • AMIC is typically used to treat articular cartilage defects greater than 2 cm².
  • Clinical studies have shown that AMIC can significantly improve symptoms in patients.

✅ Potential Complications

Clinicians should monitor for the following potential complications, which may lead to poor clinical outcomes:

  • New cyst formation
  • Partial detachment of the collagen membrane
  • Accompanying synovitis

✅ Bone Marrow Stimulation (Microfracture)

  • Bone marrow stimulation, also known as microfracture, is a key component of the AMIC procedure.
  • However, bone overgrowth has been observed in 25% to 49% of cases, though its clinical significance remains uncertain.
