📌 Surgical Options for Knee Arthroplasty

1. PCL-Retaining TKA

  • In PCL-retaining TKAs, the tibial and femoral metal components preserve the native PCL, providing stability.
  • Suitable for patients with adequate bone stock, intact soft tissues, and an intact PCL.

2. Posterior-Stabilized TKA

  • Posterior-stabilized TKAs replace the function of the PCL, preventing anterior translation of the femur on the tibia during flexion.
  • These provide stability by limiting posterior motion in flexion.
  • They offer increased range of motion without significant differences in complication rates compared to PCL-retaining TKAs.

3. Varus-Valgus Constrained TKA

  • Varus-valgus constrained implants, with a tall tibial post and deep femoral box, provide stability in the coronal plane.
  • They are used for severe valgus deformities, collateral ligament deficiency, bone defects, and residual instability.

4. Unicompartmental Arthroplasty

  • This procedure resurfaces the articular surfaces of a single compartment, commonly the medial compartment, making it ideal for patients with unicompartmental OA.
