📌 Polyethylene Wear-Induced Synovitis
- Polyethylene wear-induced synovitis is commonly observed in patients with joint replacements, particularly those involving polyethylene components.
- This condition is characterized by an inflammatory response due to the wear particles generated from polyethylene components.
✅ MRI Findings
- A recent study noted that more synovial proliferation on MRI corresponded with greater polyethylene wear.
- In addition to frondlike synovial proliferation and thickened synovium, intermediate signal intra-articular debris can also be seen in polyethylene wear–induced synovitis.
Characteristics of polyethylene wear–induced synovitis
- Frond-like Synovial thickening
- Dense synovial proliferation
- Debris with low-to-intermediate signal intensity (similar to the intensity of skeletal muscle)
- Variable amounts of interspersed fluid and joint distention
These characteristics help distinguish polyethylene wear-induced synovitis from other types of synovitis
