➕ Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis

✅ Definition & Epidemiology

  • Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis is a common adolescent hip condition affecting the proximal femoral physis.
  • More common in boys, with onset at 10-17 years (boys) and 8-15 years (girls).

✅ Pathophysiology

  • Salter-Harris Type I growth plate injury due to mechanical stress and hormonal factors.
  • Initial pre-slip phase: widened growth plate, physeal irregularity, and metaphyseal demineralization.
  • Acute slip: Posteromedial displacement of the epiphysis.
  • Chronic slip: Sclerotic physis, widened metaphysis (coxa magna).

✅ Radiographic Findings

  • Frog-leg lateral view best visualizes posterior displacement.
  • AP Hip View Findings:

✅ Key Takeaways

  • Early detection is crucial for preventing complications.
  • Frog-leg lateral view is superior to AP for diagnosis.
  • Look for Klein’s line disruption and metaphyseal blanch sign on AP.
