* MM: The larger, more open C- shaped medial meniscus increases in width from anterior to posterior, resulting in a larger posterior horn compared with the anterior horn when viewed in cross-section.

* LM: The more circular lateral meniscus maintains a relatively constant width, resulting in the anterior and posterior horns being nearly equal in size in cross-section

Circumferential collagen fibers create normal meniscal hoop tension.

Radial (radial tie) fibers stabilize longitudinally oriented circumferential collagen fibers and also help resist meniscal extrusion. Middle perforating collagen fibers represent a concentration of radially oriented collagen fibers in the central plane of the meniscus. (the site of preferential horizontal mucinous degeneration)
