📌 Fissure with Chondral Flap
✅ Chondral Fissures and Delamination
- Chondral fissures may result in delamination of the cartilage and chondral flap lesions if there is extension of the fissure parallel to the surface of the bone.
- MRI Appearance of Chondral Delamination: With MRI, chondral delamination usually appears as a thin line of near-fluid signal intensity beneath the deep zone of articular cartilage, at the tidemark, separating the noncalcified cartilage from the underlying bone and calcified cartilage.
✅ Transverse Region of Failure
- A transversely oriented region of failure in the midzone of articular cartilage is sometimes seen in association with chondral fissures on MRI.
- The transversely-oriented region of failure that is sometimes seen in the midzone of articular cartilage may represent delamination between pathologically disorganized collagen fibers.
