Vertical Flap Tear, also known colloquially as the Parrot Beak Tear.

This particular form of tear is notable for its unique composition and the resulting displacement pattern.

Composition of the Tear:

The Vertical Flap Tear is characterized by having both radial and longitudinal components.

Origin and Progression:

Classically, this injury begins as a radial tear, located centrally in the meniscus.

However, as the tear progresses, it assumes a longitudinal orientation, extending towards the periphery of the meniscus.

Resulting Displacement:

This specific configuration of the tear — starting radially and then extending longitudinally — predisposes the torn portion of the meniscus to displace towards the center.

As a result of this central displacement, the torn segment takes on an appearance that is often compared to a parrot’s beak.

Diagnostic Recognition:

Recognizing a Vertical Flap Tear in its early stages is crucial, as this unique pattern of displacement can significantly impact treatment options and outcomes."
