📌 MRI Findings in Lateral Patellar Dislocation

1️⃣ Osteoarticular Injuries

  • After a lateral patellar dislocation, MRI commonly reveals characteristic injuries to osteoarticular structures.
  • Typical findings include bone contusions and osteochondral fractures, often located at the medial aspect of the patella and the anterolateral aspect of the lateral femoral condyle. Additionally, intra-articular osteochondral bodies and joint effusion are frequently observed in the acute setting.
  • The osseous and osteochondral injuries related to transient lateral patellar dislocation are distinctive enough for accurate diagnosis, even if the patella has reduced.

2️⃣. Lateral Condylar Defects

  • In nearly all patients (80%–100%), bone edema of the lateral femoral condyle due to patellar impaction is observed.
  • Osteochondral lesions typically affect the anterolateral or mid-lateral aspect of the condyle.

3️⃣. Patellar Defects

  • Approximately half of the cases with osteochondral defects show a classic concave impaction deformity of the inferomedial patella, a highly specific sign of prior patellar dislocation.
