📌Anatomical Knee Recesses

✅  Central Synovial Recess

  • Located between the patella/patellar ligaments and the anterior aspect of the femur.

✅  Suprahoffatic Recess

  • Found at the superior part of Hoffa’s fat pad, close to the inferior border of the patella.

✅  Infrahoffatic Recess

  • Lies anterior to the inferior portion of the infrapatellar plica (also called ligamentum mucosum).

✅  Posterior Capsular Recesses (Midline)

  • Identified as an extension of the medial femorotibial compartment located behind the PCL.

✅  Parameniscal Recess

  • Located just superior and inferior to the level of the lateral meniscus, in contact with the lateral femoral and tibial condyles.

✅  Sub-popliteus Recess

  • Demonstrated between the popliteus tendon and the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus.

✅  Posterior Femoral Recesses (Subgastrocnemius Recesses)

  • Found posteriorly to both femoral condyles and the deep surface of the lateral and medial heads of gastrocnemius.

✅  Anterior Tibial Recess

  • A normal capsular recess located immediately anterior to the proximal tibia.
  • Medial Tibial Plateau: The periphery is concave, and the area is similar to that of the medial meniscus (MM), leading to a tight connection by the medial coronary ligament.
  • Lateral Tibial Plateau: The periphery is convex, larger than the area of the lateral meniscus (LM), resulting in a redundant attachment of the lateral coronary ligament.

✅  Superior Posteromedial Recess

  • Delimited superiorly by the medial femoral condyle, inferiorly by the superior part of the posterior meniscal horn, and posteriorly by the ramp capsule.

✅  Inferior Posteromedial Recess

  • Delimited postero-superiorly by the posterior part of the meniscotibial (or coronary) ligament and anteriorly by the tibial plate.
