📌Cases of the factors contributing to varus and valgus instability after TKA

1️⃣ Peri-prosthetic Fractures

  • Medial femoral epicondyle/condyle fractures
  • Risk of asymmetric extension instability

2️⃣ Osteolysis

  • Can lead to pathologic fractures
  • Increases risk of asymmetric extension instability

3️⃣ Aseptic Loosening

  • Tibial tray subsidence
  • Results in varus deformity

4️⃣ Polyethylene Wear

  • Caused by excessively tight medial extension gap
  • Leads to varus deformity recurrence and TKA failure
  • An excessively tight extension gap on the medial side can lead to medial polyethylene wear from overload and subsequent varus deformity recurrence with TKA failure.

5️⃣ Ligamentous Failure

  • e.g., Lateral collateral ligament tear
  • Causes post-TKA instability

6️⃣ Other Factors

  • Osteonecrotic bone collapse: femoral component subsidence
  • Tibial component loosening and valgus subsidence
