📌Cases of the factors contributing to varus and valgus instability after TKA
1️⃣ Peri-prosthetic Fractures
- Medial femoral epicondyle/condyle fractures
- Risk of asymmetric extension instability
2️⃣ Osteolysis
- Can lead to pathologic fractures
- Increases risk of asymmetric extension instability
3️⃣ Aseptic Loosening
- Tibial tray subsidence
- Results in varus deformity
4️⃣ Polyethylene Wear
- Caused by excessively tight medial extension gap
- Leads to varus deformity recurrence and TKA failure
- An excessively tight extension gap on the medial side can lead to medial polyethylene wear from overload and subsequent varus deformity recurrence with TKA failure.
5️⃣ Ligamentous Failure
- e.g., Lateral collateral ligament tear
- Causes post-TKA instability
6️⃣ Other Factors
- Osteonecrotic bone collapse: femoral component subsidence
- Tibial component loosening and valgus subsidence
