📌 Pyogenic Arthritis
✅ Early Detection
- MR imaging (T2 or STIR sequences) can detect early signs of septic arthritis, such as synovial inflammation and joint effusions.
- Bone marrow edema, indicating inflammation, is frequently observed at this stage.
✅ Progression to Cartilage Destruction
- Progressing synovial inflammation leads to cartilage destruction and marginal erosions, often detectable within days in animal studies.
- Joint space narrowing occurs as cartilage and cortical bone are destroyed.
- Conventional radiography better detects subtle joint space narrowing, while MR imaging is superior for visualizing erosions in the bare area of the joint.
✅ Subchondral Bone Changes
- Subchondral bone changes, such as edema, cyst formation, and destructive bone changes, occur with cartilage destruction, indicating the transition to subacute and chronic stages of septic arthritis.
✅ Chronic Stage Complications
- Chronic septic arthritis can result in osteomyelitis and severe bone destruction, leading to joint ankylosis and impaired mobility.
