This mnemonic organizes the extensor tendons as they pass beneath the extensor retinaculum, oriented medial → lateral.
Order at the anterior ankle
- T: Tibialis anterior (TA)
- H: Extensor hallucis longus (EHL)
- D: Extensor digitorum longus (EDL)
Radiology perspective
- On axial ankle MRI, these tendons are lined up at the anterior aspect, deep to the extensor retinaculum.
- Tibialis anterior is the most medial and robust dorsiflexor.
- EHL sits centrally, coursing to the great toe.
- EDL is lateral, splitting into slips for the lesser toes.
- Pathology includes tendonitis, tears, or subluxation; identifying this order avoids confusion with peroneal tendons more laterally.
This simple mnemonic ensures quick orientation for radiologists and clinicians when reviewing cross-sectional imaging or teaching ankle anatomy.
