Accessory Iliotibial Band–Meniscal Ligament (AIML)
✅ Definition:
The anatomic variation of the anterolateral fixation of the lateral meniscus to the ITB, which we have termed the “accessory iliotibial band–meniscal ligament” or “AIML.”
✅ Prevalence:
An AIML was present in 13.3% of all patients (136/1019).
✅ Clinical Significance:
The presence of an AIML is strongly associated with:
- Tears of the anterior horn and body of the lateral meniscus
- Intrasubstance abnormalities
- Parameniscal cysts
- Hoffa edema
