📌 Popliteus Tendinosis and Tenosynovitis

✅ Etiology and Pathogenesis

  • Repetitive stress on the popliteus can lead to popliteus tendinosis and tenosynovitis.
  • There is no acute event associated with these conditions.

✅ MR Imaging Findings

★ Tendinosis

  • On T2-weighted MR images, the popliteus tendon may show increased intrasubstance signal.
  • Tendon enlargement and intrasubstance intermediate signal are characteristic features of popliteus tendinosis.
  • Interstitial splitting and partial tearing may be superimposed upon tendinosis.

★ Tenosynovitis

  • Fluid surrounding the popliteus tendon in the absence of joint effusion should raise suspicion of tenosynovitis.

✅ Clinical Associations

  • Popliteus tendinosis results from chronic repetitive stress and may be seen in downhill runners.
