📌 Comparison of Fabella and Cyamella

The fabella and cyamella differ in their locations and characteristics.

✅ Fabella:

  • Located in the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle
  • Rarely found in the medial head of the gastrocnemius
  • Best visualized on lateral radiographic views

✅ Cyamella:

  • A rare sesamoid bone within the popliteus tendon
  • Characteristically located at the lateral aspect of the distal femur in the popliteal groove
  • Best visualized on anteroposterior (AP) radiographic views
  • May appear similar to a loose body on imaging

📌 Location of the Cyamella

  1. Lateral to the lateral femoral condyle, near the origin of the popliteus tendon and often within the popliteal sulcus.
  2. Lateral to the tibial condyle and proximal to the fibular head.
  3. Near the tibial plateau, posteromedial to the tibiofibular joint.
