📌 Comparison of Fabella and Cyamella
The fabella and cyamella differ in their locations and characteristics.
✅ Fabella:
- Located in the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle
- Rarely found in the medial head of the gastrocnemius
- Best visualized on lateral radiographic views
✅ Cyamella:
- A rare sesamoid bone within the popliteus tendon
- Characteristically located at the lateral aspect of the distal femur in the popliteal groove
- Best visualized on anteroposterior (AP) radiographic views
- May appear similar to a loose body on imaging
📌 Location of the Cyamella
- Lateral to the lateral femoral condyle, near the origin of the popliteus tendon and often within the popliteal sulcus.
- Lateral to the tibial condyle and proximal to the fibular head.
- Near the tibial plateau, posteromedial to the tibiofibular joint.
