📌 Patella Alta

  • Patella Alta refers to an abnormally high position of the patella.
  • Clinical Associations:
  • Reference: Stoller's Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, David W. Stoller, 2016

✅ Example:

  • Patellar Sleeve Fracture: Unique to the pediatric population (8-12 years). These fractures involve the avulsion of the inferior pole of the patella, termed a “sleeve fracture” because a sleeve of unossified cartilage and bone is stripped off the lower pole of the patella.

📌 Patella Baja

  • Definition: Patella Baja is characterized by an abnormally low position of the patella.

✅ Clinical Associations:

  • Often seen with Osgood-Schlatter disease
  • May result from patellar realignment procedures involving repositioning or shortening of the patellar tendon
  • Can occur post-surgery (e.g., tibial tubercle transfers, total knee arthroplasty)
  • Reference: Stoller's Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, David W. Stoller, 2016

✅ Additional Notes:

  • Patella baja is usually not associated with functional abnormalities.
  • Adults with prior Osgood-Schlatter disease findings are more likely to have patella alta, which can lead to patellofemoral maltracking, chondrosis, and transient patellar dislocation.
