MPFL (Medial Patellofemoral Ligament) Anatomy

by MSK MRI 2023. 12. 31.

Medial Patellar Retinacular Structures

✓ Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL): (most important component)
✓ Medial patellotibial ligament (MPTL)
✓ Medial patellomeniscal ligament (MPML)
✓ Medial quadriceps tendon femoral ligament (MQTFL)

Composition of the MPFL

  • A stronger transverse band and a more variable, weaker oblique decussation.
  • Two components:
    1. Transverse Component (tMPFL)
      • Originates more superiorly from the osseous groove between the medial femoral epicondyle and the adductor tubercle, extending to the medial patella (proximal two-thirds).
      • Appears as a horizontally oriented, ribbon-like ligament.
    2. Oblique Decussation Component (odMPFL)
      • Arises from the anterior edge of the sMCL.
