Medial Patellar Retinacular Structures
✓ Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL): (most important component)
✓ Medial patellotibial ligament (MPTL)
✓ Medial patellomeniscal ligament (MPML)
✓ Medial quadriceps tendon femoral ligament (MQTFL)
Composition of the MPFL
- A stronger transverse band and a more variable, weaker oblique decussation.
- Two components:
- Transverse Component (tMPFL)
- Originates more superiorly from the osseous groove between the medial femoral epicondyle and the adductor tubercle, extending to the medial patella (proximal two-thirds).
- Appears as a horizontally oriented, ribbon-like ligament.
- Oblique Decussation Component (odMPFL)
- Arises from the anterior edge of the sMCL.
- Transverse Component (tMPFL)
