๐Ÿš‘ Patterns of LM posterior horn tears and posterior root tears ๐Ÿš‘

Radiographics. 2023 Jul;43(7):e220208

1. Wrisberg rip tear

2. Complete radial tear at the meniscus posterior horn and root junction, including meniscofemoral ligament attachment

3. Radial tear sparing the meniscofemoral ligament attachment without associated root stump displacement

4. Radial tear sparing the meniscofemoral ligament attachment with associated root stump displacement

๐Ÿš‘  2nd pattern tear ๐Ÿš‘

  • Complete radial tear at the meniscus posterior horn and root junction, including meniscofemoral ligament attachment
  • The MFLs also stabilize and protect the lateral meniscus by displacing its posterior horn during knee motion, thus improving the congruence between the lateral meniscus and lateral femoral condyle.
  • Extrusion of the lateral meniscus in association with a posterior root tear is much less common compared to posterior root tears of the medial meniscus.
  • The meniscofemoral ligaments, which are generally present, appear to help maintain the stability of the lateral meniscus
