★ Mucoid degeneration

Mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) presents a diagnostic challenge that could lead to misinterpretation as partial ruptures if not accurately recognized. Key indicators include:

  • Celery Stalk Appearance: This unique pattern is a hallmark of mucoid degeneration
  • Ganglion Cysts: The presence of ganglion cysts, either around or within the ACL, is closely associated with mucoid degeneration. These cysts are pivotal in aiding identification and differentiation from other ACL pathologies.

★ Complete ACL tear

A Complete ACL Tear is characterized by a markedly different appearance:

  • Amorphous Cloud-Like Appearance: This feature denotes a high signal intensity that resembles mass-like tissue, which could be confused with mucoid degeneration at a glance. However, the complete lack of ACL fibers and the mass-like aspect serve as differentiating factors.

📌 Key Differentiation Points:

  • Mucoid degeneration is identifiable by its celery stalk appearance and the association with ganglion cysts.
  • A complete ACL tear, on the other hand, is distinguished by an amorphous, cloud-like high signal intensity without the structured appearance of intact ACL fibers.
