📌Pes Anserinus Bursitis

Pes anserinus bursitis refers to inflammation of the bursa located deep to the conjoined tendons (pes anserinus) on the medial aspect of the knee.

✅ Anatomic Considerations

  • Bursa does not communicate with knee joint cavity
  • Located deep to semitendinosus, gracilis, and sartorius tendons
  • Most frequently distal to joint line along distal superficial MCL and tibial metaphysis

✅ Etiology

  • Associated with athletic activity
  • Degenerative arthritis

✅ Imaging Findings

  • Increased bursal fluid
  • Thickened bursal wall
  • Surrounding edema
  • Abnormal enhancement
  • Septated fluid collection with bursa superficial to MCL, deep to sartorius/gracilis tendons

★ Anatomic Note

  • Sartorius enveloped by crural fascia layer 1
  • Gracilis/semitendinosus between layers 1 and 2
  • Gracilis tendon within septated fluid, sartorius more superficial
