✅ The Importance of the Fibular Head

  • The fibular head acts as a crucial anchor for the various supportive structures of the posterolateral corner of the knee joint.
  • Certain bony injuries, such as avulsion fractures of the fibular head (also known as arcuate fractures or the arcuate sign), can provide diagnostic clues for an underlying posterolateral corner injury. These fractures occur at the insertion sites of the posterolateral corner components.
  • The location and size of a fibular head avulsion fracture can help predict the underlying soft tissue structure that is attached and potentially injured.

✅ Attachments at the Fibular Head

1️⃣ Lateral Margin:

  • Biceps femoris tendon
  • Lateral collateral ligament

2️⃣ Posterior Apex (Proximal and Medial):

  • Arcuate ligament
  • Fabellofibular ligament

3️⃣ Posterior Apex (Most Medial):

  • Popliteofibular ligament
