📌 The Retropatellar Articular Surface
✅ Components:
- Larger lateral facet
- Median ridge
- Medial facet
- Odd facet (30% of knees) - medial to medial facet
1️⃣ Medial Facet:
- Flat or convex shape
- Variable cartilage thickness
- Sometimes divided into medial facet proper and odd facet by vertical ridge
2️⃣ Lateral Facet:
- Longer and wider than medial facet
- Concave in vertical and transverse planes
3️⃣ Odd Facet:
- Normal variant
- Thin cartilage strip separated from medial facet by ridge
- Articulates with femur only in deep flexion
📌 The Wiberg Classification
- Type 1: Both facets gently concave, symmetrical, nearly equal size
- Type 2: Medial facet smaller than lateral facet Medial - flat or convex Lateral - concave Most common (65%)
- Type 3: Medial facet distinctly smaller than lateral facet Marked lateral predominance (25%)
- Type 4: Relative hypoplasia of medial facet
