📌 Patellar Tendon Partial Tear
✅ Mechanism of Injury
- Overuse Injuries: Lead to focal tears due to repetitive microtrauma.
- Acute Tears: Result from sudden, high-velocity eccentric contraction of the quadriceps femoris, especially in a flexed knee, commonly in men under 40.
- Athletes, particularly football players, are at a higher risk due to direct impacts to the anterior knee.
✅ Risk Factors
- Chronic Microtrauma and Tendinopathy
- Previous Tendon Graft Harvest for ACL Repair
- Prolonged Steroid Use
- Systemic Diseases: Chronic renal failure, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis
✅ Clinical Presentation and Diagnosis
- Complete Tears: Less common than partial tears, typically at the patellar attachment, but can occur in the midsubstance, tibial tuberosity, or be multifocal.
- Imaging (MRI): Shows discontinuity of the tendon and extensive edema in acute tears.
- Patella Baja: Low-lying patella with shortened tendon seen post knee trauma or surgery.
