📌Anatomy Review Prepatellar Quadriceps Continuation

  • Normally no space between prepatellar quadriceps continuation and anterior patella
  • Small fibrocartilage layer can detach from bone, minimizing friction (AJR 2009)
  • May explain traumatic separation of this layer from patella without tendon disruption

📌Separating Prepatellar Quadriceps Continuation

  • Appears as thin fluid anterior to patella with intact tendons
  • Seen in patients with anterior knee pain (AJR 2009)
  • Do not mistake for simple prepatellar bursitis (MRI Web Clinic 2014)

✅ Key Teaching Points

  • Prepatellar fluid could represent bursitis or deeper injury to prepatellar quadriceps continuation
  • Attachment of this layer may be disrupted in trauma
  • Has implications for injury type and treatment approach
