📌Anatomy Review Prepatellar Quadriceps Continuation
- Normally no space between prepatellar quadriceps continuation and anterior patella
- Small fibrocartilage layer can detach from bone, minimizing friction (AJR 2009)
- May explain traumatic separation of this layer from patella without tendon disruption
📌Separating Prepatellar Quadriceps Continuation
- Appears as thin fluid anterior to patella with intact tendons
- Seen in patients with anterior knee pain (AJR 2009)
- Do not mistake for simple prepatellar bursitis (MRI Web Clinic 2014)
✅ Key Teaching Points
- Prepatellar fluid could represent bursitis or deeper injury to prepatellar quadriceps continuation
- Attachment of this layer may be disrupted in trauma
- Has implications for injury type and treatment approach
